US, Cuba to resume talks on security issues – 01/13/2023

The Department of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday (12) that a high-level delegation from the United States will visit Cuba soon to resume dialogue with the communist country on security issues.

“U.S. and Cuban officials will meet this month in Havana (…) to discuss issues of mutual interest in international law enforcement,” such as transnational crime, a department spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

The official did not release the dates of the meeting, but members of the State, Justice and Homeland Security departments will be part of the delegation.

“The fact of participating in these conversations demonstrates the commitment to maintain a constructive dialogue with the Cuban government when appropriate to advance the interests of the United States,” the source added, before calling it “harmful.” Human Rights”.

Washington and Havana opened dialogue on immigration in 2022, at a record time for Cuban immigration, many of whom headed to the United States.

In January, the U.S. Embassy in Havana resumed issuing visas to Cuban nationals seeking to immigrate to their country.

But “normalizing” relations with the communist-ruled island, which has the US on its list of state sponsors of terrorism, is not on the agenda.

Former US President Donald Trump has ended the openness policy towards Cuba started by his predecessor Barack Obama.

While President Joe Biden has vowed to review US policy on Cuba, he has hardened his stance following a crackdown on anti-government protests on the island in July 2021.
