The Ministry of Health offers more than 21.5 thousand places in the Doctors for Brazil program. They will be able to work in 5,233 Brazilian municipalities, which is approximately 94% of the country. The procedure was published in an additional edition of the Federation’s Official Gazette on Friday (3). The goal is to strengthen the Individual Health System (SUS).

The program will gradually replace Brazil’s Mais Médicos project at Ateno Primria Sade (APS). Physicians selected for the program are offered training in family and community medicine, performance evaluation, employability through the CLT system, career advancement (to reduce turnover) and gratitude for working in remote, healthy Indigenous areas.

Health administrators from eligible municipalities must register on the Doctors for Brazil website, the notice of which must be published on Monday (6). A notification of the physician selection process will also be published this month.

“The recommendation is that managers not miss the opportunity to bring health and the presence of qualified doctors to serve the citizen with dignity,” said Rafael Samara, secretary of primary care in the ministry. Primary Health (Adaps), responsible for managing the new program.

The municipalities were selected taking into account their extreme vulnerability and the fact that many of them are in remote rural areas.

Physicians for Brazil was launched in 2019 with the aim of structuring the federal medical profession for places with difficult services and severe vulnerabilities. The estimated budget for implementation in the first year of operation is R$1.2 billion.
