US military personnel, together with the Brazilian military, began this Monday (6) the second phase of Operation “Core 23”, conducting exercises in the Amazon for the first time. A ceremony at the 22nd Jungle Infantry Regiment in Makappa marked the beginning of operations that will continue till November 16.

The program included a graduation ceremony and a gender panel on ‘Women in the Armed Forces’, a reference to women’s entry into the military.

An operational exercise marks this stage, which will take place in the municipalities of Ferreira Gómez and Oyapoque. Operations in the Clevelandia do Norte district in Oiapoque include airmobile assault operations using Brazilian military helicopters and operations in jungle environments.

Core means integrated activity and circuit training in Portuguese. The operation results from a cooperation program signed between Brazil and the United States, and provides for a series of joint exercises until 2028.

This is the third edition. The first took place in Brazil in 2021, and the second in 2022 in Louisiana. In the process, the countries’ troops share their experiences and defense and doctrine techniques, tactics and procedures. This version involved 1,200 soldiers from the Northern Army Command.

Through the exercises, the troops of the two countries will share experiences on doctrine, techniques, tactics and defense practices, aiming to expand interoperability between the armies and improve ground military doctrine, the Brazilian military highlighted.

Completion of ‘Core 23’ is scheduled for November 16 at Companhia Especial de Fronteira (CEF) in Oyabok.
