Today is rock day, baby. And that’s really because July 13th is considered International Rock Music Day. And do you know why? In fact, although it is considered the International Day, this date is only celebrated in Brazil. Also, the interpretation of the choice does not include Brazilian bands, but rather a request made by British musician Phil Collins.

38 years ago, exactly on July 13, 1985, the famous Live Aid took place, a charity event that was held simultaneously in London (England) and Philadelphia (USA). In addition to Collins, the festival has brought together big names in music on the planet such as Elton John, Queen, Madonna, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Duran Duran, U2, The Who, Tom Petty, Neil Young and Eric Clapton, among others.

Collins, by the way, was the only artist to perform on both Live Aid main stages on the same day. After his concert in the English capital, he flies on the supersonic Concorde to the United States. Proceeds from the event, which was broadcast on BBC television, were used to fight hunger in Ethiopia. On stage, the artist declared between his iconic performances that what happened there was so important and so unique in music history that it should be marked as “International Rock Day”.

However, his speech did not seem to have caused much stir at the time, and only two radio stations in São Paulo responded to the musician’s request, 89 FM and 97 FM, already in the 1990s. Unified in Brazil.

There is no international rock and roll date. Some countries use their own signs to mark the beat. In the United States, for example, there are celebrations on July 9, in honor of the TV show “American Bandstand”, hosted by Dick Clark – an important name in the promotion of rock artists.
