1. You died

Temtem was released in 2020 and arrived on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series Along with Palworld, it is among the most popular versions of Pokemon and has been long-awaited by fans. The main difference is that this is an MMORPG, i.e. a title that works online and with many other players.

In addition, Temtem has many innovations, such as vehicles to drive and a variety of things that can be used freely, such as sports activities. The game also features battles between catchable and collectible creatures, much like in Pokémon. During gameplay, players can participate in these duels together, exchange monsters, as well as unlock secret animals.

2. Kuromon

Coromon is more recent: it arrived in March 2022 for PC, via Steam, Android mobile and iPhone (iOS), as well as receiving a version on Nintendo Switch shortly after that. The proposal closely follows the other versions, but with simpler drawings and an older style. The game puts the user on a journey with a plot that involves a group of researchers who need to uncover the secrets of the organization. To get help along the journey, it is possible to catch and train Coromon, as happens in Pokémon.

Coromon features difficulty selection for greater challenge, boss battles, creature status customization, and over 120 unique animations for each monster, as well as areas that vary in setting. It's a more nostalgic game, even though it's fresh and modern.

3. Cassette Monsters

Cassette Beasts is another very recent example on this list. The game arrives in April 2023 for Xbox Series The game stands out because of the story. At first, it doesn't appear to be a copy of Pokemon. This is because the game has its own personality and offers you a plot full of mysteries about an ancient civilization that exists in this magical and technological world.

But over time, the monsters in this version are presented on music cassettes – hence the name. Cassette Beasts also bets on outdated graphics and can be considered one of the weakest games on this list in this regard. However, it is a game with a story full of surprises.

4. Slime Rancher

The first Slime Rancher is already a classic title. It was released in 2016, at that time for PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game is one of the furthest from Pokémon on the list. This is due to its focus on creatures inspired by Slimes, those “annoying objects” typically found in RPGs.

The player captures slime in all its forms, with a wide variety of forms and uses, and uses them on his farm. It is also possible to use Slimes in combat, but the whole method of capturing and using them is very different compared to Pokemon. The similarity to Slime Rancher is only due to the “harvesting” factor.

5. Bugsnacks

Bugsnax is another game that even remotely resembles Pokemon. It was born as a Sony exclusive and was released for PS5 and PS4 in 2020. Shortly after that, it got releases on other consoles, such as Nintendo Switch and also on PC. The game has a collecting factor and lets you capture different types of monsters, but here they become food.

The goal in Bugsnax is to capture food-like monsters on Snaktooth Island. All the animals are half insects and half candy – and thus serve as food to feed the creature you control on the map. Bugsnax is different and fun, with a lot of good humor used in creating the monsters.

6. Digimon Survival

There have been many Digimon games released over the years, but one of the most recent examples is Digimon Survive, which was released in 2022 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. In this game we control a group of teenagers who come into contact with Digimon for the first time, but everything changes when something strange happens between them.

Digimon Survive is a visual novel, that is, a story in which we follow the plot through a lot of dialogue and scenes between “static” characters, with only a few movements on the screen. However, there are still combat components, which again introduces strategic battles in Digimon saga games.

7. Monster Rancher 1 and 2 DX

90s classics, the first two Monster Ranchers have been re-released in a unique package called Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX. The game was released in 2021 for Nintendo Switch and PC, bringing back the original two games from the famous saga. This is another Pokemon clone that has been successful in the past with the cartoon.

In the original Monster Rancher, which was released on PlayStation, players captured monsters using music CDs inserted into the video game. Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX has a system that replaces this function, inputting a large music database to generate monsters from. Therefore, it is possible to use creatures in exploration of this RPG, as well as in battles.

8. Moonstone Island

Moonstone Island will be released in September 2023 on Nintendo Switch and PC. The game is less of a Pokémon clone and more of a life simulation, and it comes close to Stardew Valley – especially in terms of graphics. However, it is possible to capture and collect monsters, which in turn aid in quests on your farm, Palworld style.

Just like in Stardew Valley, Moonstone Island also allows you to socialize with other residents of the area, where you can develop bonds and give gifts to friends. Despite this suggestion, the gameplay also features several battles and a card-based system to define your attacks and strengthen creatures.

9. Monster Sanctuary

Monster Sanctuary is a 2019 game on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. This title is a Pokemon clone with “Metroidvania” elements, as games are called that borrow mechanics from Metroid and Castlevania. Thus, the title has plenty of explorable maps that allow you to go back and forth depending on the new skills unlocked along the way.

The adventure is a 2D platformer with simple controls, but allows you to capture small monsters and use them to your advantage in combat to reach previously inaccessible locations, such as underwater or on higher platforms. Monster Sanctuary also bets on old graphics to win over nostalgic fans.
