Soldiers and engineers try to open a reinforced concrete manhole to extract Tai Li Hau Nam. “The boy has been trapped for four days, and it is possible that he sustained several injuries,” said the deputy head of the People’s Committee of Dong Thap Province (south), Duan Tan Boo.

Apparently, Tae Lee Hau Nam was scavenging for scrap metal when he fell into a concrete hole just 25 centimeters wide, Boo told AFP by phone, at a construction site for a new bridge in Dong Thap province.

“We tried to save the boy with the means at our disposal,” he said. “Then we had to seek help at the national level and from specialists,” he added.

According to the local press, rescuers tried to dig and soften the surrounding soil so they could dig out the concrete and get the boy out.

On Monday, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on federal rescue teams to join local authorities in rescuing the boy.
