Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Chavista opposition in Venezuela, warned on Wednesday (8) that if Maduro continues to use force to secure a new electoral mandate or commit massive fraud, the country will be responsible for the largest migration crisis ever in Venezuelan history.

This came during a virtual conference held at the New York-based Council of the Americas. According to the policy, “this means immediate [após o chavismo manipular as eleições]In less than a year, there will be about two or even five million Venezuelans fleeing the country.

Machado stated that this would have serious consequences not only for Venezuela, but for the entire Latin American region, where migrants will flee. In her speech, she highlighted that the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, are already aware of these repercussions.

At the conference, the winner of the opposition primaries declared once again that she had the support of the international community in this “fight” for free elections under fair conditions, and even “former allies” of Nicolas Maduro’s regime, among whom were already mentioned the leftists Lula and Petro.

On the other hand, if Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, the candidate of the main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unionist Party, wins by default, this issue will be resolved quickly. “If he is elected as the next president, the international community will not only see migration stop, but reverse its trend,” Machado said.

He added: “We have a legitimate leadership, we have a candidate who enjoys the support of the Venezuelan people and all democratic political parties, and we have a huge civil movement that is growing more and more, and has the support of more than 80%.”
