The Israeli army carried out an operation in the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, and freed two Argentine hostages. The procedure was carried out during the early hours of Monday (12), local time – Sunday night (11), in Brazil.

According to the army, the hostages are two men aged 60 and 70 years. They were kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023, when the movement launched an attack on Israel.

“Both are in good medical condition and were transferred to Sheba Tel Hashomer Hospital for examinations. [em Israel]”, according to what the Israeli forces reported.

The Argentine presidency stated in a statement that the two released hostages were Fernando Simon Marman and Luis Harr. The Argentine government also thanked Israel for the operation.

The statement read: “During his visit to the State of Israel, President Javier Milley reiterated to President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his request for the release of both Argentine hostages and continues to strongly condemn Hamas terrorism.”

Local authorities in Gaza accused Israel of attacking a refugee camp, killing people, according to Reuters. The information could not be independently verified.

Witnesses interviewed by Reuters said that planes, tanks and ships participated in the operation and hit two mosques and homes.

The city, located on the border between Gaza and Egypt, is considered the last refuge for about 1.5 million people.

US President Joe Biden asked Netanyahu not to attack Rafah without a plan to protect civilians.
