(Sputnik) – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will have his last chance to avoid extradition to the United States during his trial in an English court in March, WikiLeaks said on Tuesday.

Earlier, WikiLeaks said a verdict in Assange's case was expected “soon”. “March: Decision on Julian Assange's final appeal in UK,” WikiLeaks said on X.

Last week, a UK court held a hearing to consider a request to extradite Assange to the US. Justices Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson said they would deliver their judgment later.

Assange, an Australian citizen, was transferred to London's high-security Belmarsh prison in April 2019 on charges of breaching bail. In the US, he faces charges under the Espionage Act for obtaining classified information and releasing it to the public. If convicted, the WikiLeaks founder could face up to 175 years in prison. One of the last avenues to prevent his extradition to the United States may be an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. Assange lost his previous appeal at the UK High Court last June.

WikiLeaks was founded by Assange in 2006, but rose to prominence in 2010 when it began publishing large-scale leaks of classified government information, including from the United States.
