president China Xi Jinping He was re-elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and is expected to hold this position for the next five years. This announcement was made on Sunday (23rd), by the president himself, at the end of the twentieth party congress. This is Xi’s third term in a row, consolidating his power as the country’s leadership.
Among the posts that Xi Jinping has accumulated is the position of general secretary to the president in China. He was also re-elected as army chief in addition to the presidency – a position about to begin a third historic term. The most powerful Chinese leader since Mao Zedong.
According to Reuters, the decision to keep Xi Jinping in power was expected.
At the end of the conference, Former Chinese President Hu Jintao was asked to leave the stage. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, Hu was in poor health and needed rest.
What changes at the Chinese government summit
The Politburo Standing Committee is a government group that sits directly below the party leader and reports directly to Xi Jinping.
In addition to the current Chinese president, Li Qiang, Zhao Lijie, Wang Huning, Kai Zhi, Deng Shuixiang and Li Xi were also elected to the committees.
During his speech, Xi declared Li Qiang, a former irrelevant party secretary in Shanghai, to be “Member No. 2” and Zhao Lijie, who was already a member of the previous committee, was promoted to “No. 3”. Since 1990, member No. 2 of the committee has been prime minister, while member No. 3 has presided over the Legislative Council.
Before the changes were announced for the next five years, former Prime Minister Li Keqiang was removed from the committee, along with three other members: Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang and Han Zheng.
According to the Chinese government, they left the summit because they had reached the minimum age, which is currently 68.
In the government hierarchy, under the Politburo is the Central Committee. In this law, the minimum age is 65, which has caused the departure of other important names in the government, including Yi Gang, director of China’s central bank, and Liu He, deputy prime minister and head of China’s economy.
What are the changes in the constitution?
The meeting, held every five years, ended with the approval of amendments to the party’s constitution that cement Xi Jinping’s leadership.
The party constitution is a highly authoritative document that all 96 million party members must abide by. Changes made during the conference will remain in effect indefinitely.
The reviews include policy priorities and directions that Xi has identified in the past, including:
- The rules that define the party leader as the central authority of the country and his ideas as guiding China’s development
- Recognition of the party as the ultimate leading political force
- Opposition to separatists seeking independence for Taiwan
- Claiming political loyalty in the army
