US Embassy invests in Amazon: 125 representatives of traditional communities receive English lessons

The course will address sustainability coupled with language learning

Brasilia, February 6, 2024: The Embassy and Consulates of the United States in Brazil, this Tuesday (6), selected 125 representatives of traditional communities in the legal Amazon (young tribes, quilombolas and riverine dwellers) from all states to participate in the Access Amazon 2024 program. Legal Amazon aims to expand the leadership potential of participants through the teaching of basic English and the exchange of experiences and practices.

“The Access Amazon 2024 program is an opportunity for these young leaders to strengthen their skills and knowledge and expand their network of contacts. In doing so, they will be better prepared to contribute to Amazon's sustainable growth,” said Scott Chiverton, director of the US government's English Language Regional Office.

The online program will run between February 2024 and July 2025. Five classes of 25 students have a workload of 360 class hours. During classes, students will experience language as they share their experiences and practices in relation to the environment and issues of the Amazon, its people and cultures.
