Authorities said two people were killed and four wounded, two of them critically, after a man opened fire at random on Friday in the Strasbourg-Saint-Denis district of central Paris.

Police said a 69-year-old suspect was arrested and asked citizens to stay away from the area. The motives for the attack are still unknown.

A dealer told the news agency France Press agency He heard seven or eight shots on Enghien Street in the 10th arrondissement. “Everyone panicked,” she said. “We locked ourselves in.”

“An armed attack took place. We thank the security forces for their quick reaction,” Paris deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire wrote on Twitter. He added that his thoughts are “with the victims and those who witnessed this drama”.
