The federal government will start free distribution of sanitary pads through the Unified Sanitary System (SUS). The government informed the withdrawal criteria and locations on Monday (19).

This measure belongs to the Program for the Protection and Promotion of Menstrual Hygiene established by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in March this year. The aim is to combat lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and to ensure basic health care.

to consider the programme, The person must belong to one of the groups below:

  • someone who lives on the streets or lives in poverty;
  • a student from the public school system (federal, state, and municipal public schools);
  • belonging to a low-income family;
  • Being in the penal system or serving socio-educational measures.

Everyone must be registered with Cadastro Único.

Where can I withdraw?
In primary health care institutions, public schools, units of the unified social assistance system, prisons and institutions to comply with socio-educational measures.

The program is to serve 24 million people and will provide training for public sector employees to demonstrate the dignity of the menstrual cycle, in addition to advertising campaigns.

The measure was approved in the Senate in September 2021 and has passed into presidential sanction. At the time, President Jair Bolsonaro vetoed parts of the project. In March this year, Lula amended the decree.
