The US Department of the Interior has approved the Revolution Wind offshore wind project in Rhode Island and Connecticut. This marks the fourth DOI-approved large-scale offshore wind project in the United States. Electr.
In addition to Revolution Wind, three other projects received approval: Vineyard Wind, South Ward Wind and Offshore Wind 1. Together, these projects will increase clean energy production in the country and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Onshore construction of the Revolution Wind project is set to begin, while offshore construction is scheduled to ramp up in 2024. The wind farm is expected to be operational by 2025, providing clean energy to hundreds of thousands of homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
About the project
- The Revolution Wind project, developed by Eversource and Ørsted, will be the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the region;
- It is located approximately 24.1 km/h south of the Rhode Island coast, 51.4 km/h southeast of the Connecticut coast, and 12 miles southwest of Martha’s Vineyard;
- With a capacity of 704 MW, Revolution Wind will provide 400 MW of clean energy to Rhode Island and 304 MW to Connecticut;
- This energy production can supply more than 350,000 homes in both states, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and the use of renewable sources.
Job creation is one of the benefits of the project, with around 1,200 local jobs being created during the construction phase. It will boost the economy of the concerned regions, create employment opportunities and create sustainable development.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Holland is confident we will meet President Biden’s goal of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030. The approval is an important step for the revolutionary wind project, which shows the political commitment to increase renewable energy production. .
Liz Burdock, founder and CEO of the Business Network for Offshore Wind, highlighted that the approval reinforces investments in components manufacturing, cable fabrication and shipbuilding in various US states.
