Manchester City beat Chelsea in the League Cup

Manchester City beat Chelsea in the League Cup

It took Manchester City five minutes to defeat Chelsea in the third round of the League Cup. City even saved some of their holders, as they beat the Blues 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium and qualified for the round of 16 of the competition.

After cutting off the first half, in which the goalkeepers outperformed the attackers, Pep Guardiola’s men scored in the eighth and thirteenth minutes of the last stage, with Mahrez and Alvarez, respectively, to ensure the victory.

With Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne on the bench, the highlight of City was goalkeeper Ortega, the reserve of the Brazilian Ederson, who performed miracles, especially in the second half, and kept the goal at zero.

City maintained their dominance over Chelsea in the League Cup. That’s because the last meeting between the two teams took place at the end of the 2019 season, when Guardiola’s men won on penalties after a goalless draw in regular and overtime.

Manchester City return to the field on Saturday (12), at 9:30 a.m. (GMT), to face Brentford in the English Championship. On the other hand, Chelsea face Newcastle away from home, on the same day, at 14:30 (Brasilia time).

City control, Chelsea panic

In front of their fans, Manchester City dominated the match. With greater possession of the ball, the team had space to exchange passes and reach the opponent’s area freely. But Chelsea’s defense did the trick and stopped the main chances for the hosts.

However, the main opportunities came from the side of the Blues. Chelsea took advantage of running at high speeds against City’s high streak, and had two good chances to open the scoring, both with Pulisic, but they stopped at goalkeeper Ortega.

Where is Halland?

Manchester City missed one of the players to push the ball into the net. Despite controlling the game and making it easy to reach Chelsea’s penalty area from midfield and both sides of the field, the citizens’ errors accumulated on the last pass.

In the 30th minute of the first half, for example, Alvarez pushed Rodri in the middle, which in turn extended to Luis. The player crossed low and no one appeared to finish the play.

Ortega wall!

While City couldn’t convert their supremacy into goals, Chelsea had their best chance in the first half. Goalkeeper Ortega avoided the visitors’ goal.

In the 43rd minute of the first half, Hall Pulisic received from the left, invaded the area, cut Luis and faced Ortega head-on. The archer grew up and avoided the blues goal with his foot.

Mahrez breaks the siege

Manchester City bombed Chelsea’s goal early in the second half, and after two good saves by Mendy from Grealish’s shots, he reached the goal from set pieces.

Eight minutes into the final half, Mahrez superbly scored a free kick from the right and opened the scoring in front of a confused Mendy, who had just seen the ball go in.

quickly!

The hosts extended the score after five minutes. Grealish quickly withdrew to the left and played for Alvarez, who found Mahrez on the other side of the field. Mahrez invaded the area and ended up moving away from me. Alvarez took the rebound and pushed it into the net.

Chelsea wakes up, Ortega stuck

Goals conceded at the start of the second half awakened Chelsea, who raised their mark and looked to play quickly in an effort to chase after the damage. Goalkeeper Ortega – one of City’s outstanding substitutes in the match – closed the scoring.

In the 18th minute, Ziyech made a nice move to the right, gave Gómez a pen and played for Hall in the middle of the area. He got the first shot and Ortega went for it in the right corner.

Already on the 27th, Pulisic received inside the area, hitting at close range for a new defense of the Manchester City goalkeeper.

Not worth!

Chelsea launched the attack at the end of the first half and came close to 2-1, in a rare series of errors for Manchester City.

In the 45th minute of the last stage, goalkeeper Ortega failed, and the City defense almost scored an own goal, and in the hit and kick, the ball was left to Pulisic, who pushed it into the goal. For the convenience of those present at the Etihad Stadium, the referee ruled for offside.
