ICTP.Br In Defense of a Real Ministry of Science – ABC

The MCTI must be preserved from changes in the Esplanada dos Ministérios

The scientific and academic community entities that make up the Science and Technology Initiative of the Brazilian Parliament (ICTP.Br) have publicly expressed their serious concern about the possibility of changes in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), in the context of negotiations for new political agreements.

The Brazilian science corporation has suffered in recent years the disastrous consequences of a government that, with particular contempt for the region, sought to dismantle the structure of implementation of public policies and their financing instruments. In the new government, the beginning of the recovery of national interest strategies in which science, technology and innovation are key themes was very auspicious. However, these days, information released by the press shows that the MCTI has entered the negotiation game for the exchange of chairs and changes in the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

We are aware of the efforts currently being made by those in charge of the portfolio to return Brazilian science to the key role it deserves and to restore its promotional potential. For this and other reasons, we understand that any decline in the political management of the current administration of the ministry will be a great loss for the country and for the management of the new government. The entities therefore defend the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation from any minor interference, ensuring the continuity of the Lula government’s strategy in the areas of science, technology and innovation.
