The course, titled “Taylor Swift and Her World,” proposes an analysis of her work, as well as a deep dive into the artist’s lyrics, music and influences.

The lessons will be taught by Stephanie Burt, a fan of Taylor since 2009. She plans to follow changes in American culture through a career as a singer.

Taylor is known for her well-documented shift from country music to pop music, which coincided with her move from Nashville to Manhattan. “She is someone who enters into complex and shifting relationships with the idea of Americanness and the idea of white America and middle America,” Stefani explained.

The professor also said the singer’s influence on politics and culture is worth studying. Throughout the course, students will be asked to undertake at least one investigative assignment focusing on Taylor’s compositions, performances, life, and career.

“We are fortunate to live in a time when one of our greatest artists is one of the most famous people on the planet. Why don’t we have a course on this,” he noted.
