Recife played a real ‘classic’ in Geraldo in the first of two highly anticipated games of the Copa America de Basket in Recife. With the arena practically packed with 8,000 fans, the Mexican team went head-to-head and overcame the North American support, winning 73 to 67.
Both the first and second quarters ended by one point. However, thanks to the great play of Fabian James and Yahir Bonilla, Mexico was able to hold off three U.S. possessions and end the third quarter with a score of 56-48.
Mexico equalized in the last 10 minutes. But as America forced it, Mexico won 73-67.
Then, to the delight of eight thousand sold-out fans, the much-anticipated opening ceremony of the US tournament will take place. To start off on the right foot, Brazil welcomes Canada at 8:40 p.m. Then, due to the delay of the Panama delegation, Venezuela faces off, and at 10:40 p.m., Panama closes the night.
