Scientists have found the “20-armed strawberry” in the mysterious icy depths of the Southern Ocean. According to the first studies conducted on this curious animal, it belongs to the same class as starfish and sea urchin.

With this evidence, the animal was nicknamed the “Antarctic Strawberry Feather Star” or “Antarctic Strawberry Feather Star”. The scientific name for this species is Promacocrinus fragarius, which belongs to the genus crinoid, a type of marine animal that usually has feathered skeletons.

Previously, the Promachocrinus species had a single representative, Promachocrinus kerguelensis, which was discovered in the 19th century.

Unusual appearance

The newly discovered genus has 20 arms attached to a strawberry-like structure. From this aspect was born the name fragarius, a derivation from the Latin word phragum, meaning strawberry.

Its 20 arms are actually 20 long feathery appendages, allowing it to dance seamlessly in the dark, icy waters of the Southern Ocean. Some of these strange limbs reach large proportions, considering the small body, being up to eight inches long and characterized by interlocking knots and zigzag feathers.
