LEARN ABOUT YOUR SPONTANEOUS SELF THROUGH BIG BRUSH PAINTING IN A PARTICIPATORY WORKSHOP LED BY WORLD-RENOWNED CALLIGRAPHER BARBARA BASH.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, 19 September, 2009–“It is possible to make a brushstroke that expresses one’s whole life.” It was these words, spoken by Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, that inspired classically trained calligrapher Barbara Bash to take up large brushes and expand her work beyond Roman or Arabic alphabets, beyond the precision of the broad-edged pen. It was truly cathartic for Barbara to dip, for the first time, a big brush into a gallon of paint and, hovering, to touch it to a great length of fresh paper. Twenty years later, Barbara is just as exhilarated by what she continues to learn from teaching and practicing this rare calligraphic art, “We go through life making our marks in so many ways. [In our workshops] with brush and ink we make a true stroke of the moment.”

Since meeting her 6 years ago, Valerie Schmitz and Mary Ann Kahl, founders of Teach Me Peace, have been impressed with the powerful sense of connectedness and inner calm that Barbara’s Big Brush workshops impart. When asked how this event furthers Teach Me Peace’s charter, Mary Ann explains, “In our work we have discovered that it is important for
each individual to discover a personal discipline of peace. Such disciplines often include meditation, prayer, solitude, taking a walk in the woods, or running. We believe that contemplative art as manifested in Big Brush calligraphy also merits a place in our repertoire of personal peace practices. We offer this event hoping that attendees will discover for themselves the power and personal peace that this discipline can bring.”

The workshop is split approximately 50/50 between learning and participating and is highlighted by demonstration, meditation, breathing, and critique. Catered breakfast and lunch are included in the registration fee. Only 20 “seats” remain.
