Naga Sadhus, or Hindu clerics, take a dip in the Ganges River on April 12, 2021 during a religious festival in Haridwar, India, amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

On Saturday (9), the meeting of the leaders of the countries that make up the Group of Twenty, the group of the largest economies in the world, begins in New Delhi, Bharat state. This is the name of the country that will appear on dinner invitations between heads of state, but it is the same country known as India.

And Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi changed the name of India to the Sanskrit word for the country in his dinner invitation – and it is possible that Bharat will become the official name in the future.

According to TV network News18, anonymous government sources say that Modi’s deputies, the Bharatiya Janata Party, may introduce a resolution to highlight the official use of Bharat.

The name Bharat is already used in some circumstances.

Bharat is a Sanskrit word that, according to scholars, is found in ancient Hindu texts. The word also means India in Hindi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, Modi’s party, has the word in its name: the acronym stands for Bharatiya Janata Party.

Proponents of change claim that the word India was imposed by the British, who colonized the country for about 200 years, until independence in 1947.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is a nationalist party, and it has changed the names of places in the cities where it holds power.
