Sleep is linked to damage to mental health; Understand what the new study says

Since the first research studies in 1971, the relationship between sleep disorders and their impact on mental health has been a topic of debate. Now, in 2023, a new study conducted by scientists at the University of Montana, USA, continues to strengthen this relationship.

The study consisted of a comprehensive review of research conducted over the past 50 years examining the interaction between sleep and emotional health. The results indicate that lack of sleep not only reduces positive emotions, but also increases symptoms of anxiety.

These negative effects appear even in individuals who sleep only one or two hours less than the recommended amount.

The study analyzed 154 scientific articles over five decades, covering data from 28 countries and involving 5,715 participants. Volunteers underwent simulated acute and chronic sleep deprivation, as well as nights of interrupted sleep.

To measure emotional impact, scientists used questionnaires with responses to emotional stimuli and tests to assess symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The review results indicate that those who sleep less than necessary or have poorer sleep quality have a higher incidence of negative emotions and lower levels of positive emotions, such as joy and contentment.

In the long term, lack of sleep increases the risk of developing mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Disseminating this information among the population is crucial to promoting mental health, considering that factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, and being overweight are associated with sleep problems.

Data from the Epidemiological Study of Sleep (Episono) reveal that about 45% of the population of São Paulo complain of insomnia. To improve sleep quality, it is recommended to maintain a regular routine, sleep in a quiet environment, limit caffeine and alcohol intake, and exercise regularly. For those who suffer from sleep disorders, medical advice is essential, because a good night's sleep not only benefits physical health, but also emotional health, improving quality of life.
