PUC-Campinas holds symposium “Faith, Science and Peace: Contemporary Challenges”

The opening will be with Cardinal José Tolentino Calaca de Mendonça, Dean of the Department of Culture and Education of the Roman Curia

The Center for Faith and Culture of PUC-Campinas will hold a symposium on “Faith, Science and Peace: Contemporary Challenges,” on March 7, 8 and 11, in the First Campus Hall. The event is part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Faith and Culture Center of PUC-Campinas.

The opening will witness the participation of Cardinal José Tolentino Calaca de Mendonça
– Dean of the Department of Culture and Education of the Roman Curia, who will hold the conference “Faith, Science and the Catholic University in the 21st Century.”

Theologian and university professor Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça is also considered one of the most original voices in contemporary Portuguese literature and is recognized as a prominent Catholic intellectual. His works include poetry, essays, and plays.

A specialist in biblical studies, the relationship between Christianity and culture forms the main focus of his texts, where, as a theologian and religious thinker, he seeks to discover spiritual life in the most forgotten places, at the same time encouraging the Church to be more relevant. Present and more important.

The relationship between Christianity and culture is recurring in his texts. His works are highly respected in Portugal and are increasingly translated and published abroad. He has already won several literary awards, which recognize his career as a writer and highlight his role in the world of culture.

The cardinal is also responsible for the annual event that brings together 200 cultural figures from around the world to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican. In 2023, the meeting was attended by Brazilian artists, such as Caetano Veloso and Vic Muniz.

The symposium continues on the evening of the 7th day with a conference on “Religion, Science and Peace”, and on the 8th and 11th on “Education and Human Rights for Peace” and “Human Dignity and Economics for Peace” with lecturers from PUC-Campinas, PUC-SP and Unicamp.
