Steam is an educational approach that integrates STEM fields and is popular in the United States, China, Australia, and the United Kingdom, but is still a novelty in Brazil. Steam’s approach develops knowledge through active methodologies, such as project-based learning, based on solving real, everyday problems. The projects value the collective contribution of students and the application of knowledge and skills from various fields.

The Steam League was launched in 2022 by the ArcelorMittal Foundation and is promoting this type of approach in Brazilian schools with the Steam League Prize, which this year received submissions from nearly a thousand public school teachers in 25 Brazilian states and the Federal District. The league is an initiative of the ArcelorMittal Foundation and the Banco do Brasil Foundation, in partnership with AVSI Brasil (Association of Volunteers for International Service) and the Triade Educacional.

The list of shortlisted candidates will be announced on the 1st of September. Until December, they will receive specific training to become a reference in Steam, in order to spread this educational approach. At the end of the year, they will design an implementation project, and the following year, they will receive direction to support them in this implementation. Since there will be people from all regions of Brazil, the first part of the training will be online and the second part will involve the implementation of the project in networks.

Research from the past year shows that educators in the country understand the importance of bringing Steam projects into the classroom, including students’ creativity, communication, and critical thinking, but don’t know how to do it.

“They identified all the advantages, but they didn’t have that in their training. In Brazil, that’s very recent. Because we identified the possibility of integral student development within the school, that training is essential. So, the impact is very positive, because we realize that teachers who learn and take to their classes, or spread them on a network, reap the rewards of a more interested student, who looks around and tries to solve problems. That’s what we need: a citizen who has a broader view of their reality,” Lillian said.
