National Science and Technology Week begins on Saturday

Brazil’s largest science dissemination event begins on Saturday (14) across the country.

The 20th National Science and Technology Week in this edition has the theme Basic Science for Sustainable Development, focusing on the important contribution that science can make to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Until October 22, the public will be able to participate in science fairs and exhibitions, lectures, courses, workshops, experiments, sky observing activities, and visits to museums and science and technology institutions.

Many innovative solutions will be presented during this event. Social Technology Coordinator at the National Amazon Research Institute, Denis Gutiérrez, says the foundation’s pavilion will bring innovations, such as a solar-powered water purifier, developed by INPA, that is already being used in Amazonas.

The Science and Technology Week actions and events will be all free and open, at universities, research institutions, public and private schools, centers, museums, research support institutions and environmental parks, among other locations.

In Brasilia, the program will focus on the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Centre, where visitors will be able to see up close the exhibition celebrating Santos Dumont’s 150th birthday, which is celebrated on July 20.

In Rio de Janeiro, activities will be carried out in several institutions, including Fiocruz, UFRJ and Jardim Botânico. In the Botanical Garden, there will be platforms on Brazilian plants and biodiversity, workshops on agroecological techniques and even the opportunity to see where scientists work. The president of the Jardim Botanico Foundation, Sergio Besserman, highlights that the benefits of science go beyond innovation and technology.
