According to Spotify data, music searches of this style increased by 265% from January to September 2023. Among Brazilians, MPB is among the 15 most listened to genres. In the country, Belo Horizonte plays a prominent role. The capital of Minas Gerais is the third city that listens to this genre the most in the country, after only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, respectively.
Moreover, according to the platform, there are more than 2 million playlists dedicated to MPB – taking into account only those with “mpb” or “Brazilian popular music” in the title. Acústico MPB, Coleção MPB, O Melhor da MPB and Cafezinho are the Spotify playlists associated with the most listened to genres worldwide in the same period of 2023.
But success is not limited to the country of origin, MPB also has international appeal. So much so that searches for this species increased by 183% around the world this year. The countries with the greatest appreciation for this style are the United States, Mexico and Portugal, being the countries that listen most to this genre abroad. Followed by Argentina and France.
Among the most “exported” artists are Roberto Carlos, Antonio Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben Jor. Elise Regina, Vanessa da Mata, Fava de Belem, Gal Costa and Marisa Monti make up the top 5 most listened to MPB women abroad.
