Brazil and the United States reaffirm their commitment to eliminate non-tariff barriers

In a joint statement, Brazil and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to preventing and reducing non-tariff barriers to bilateral trade. The speech highlighted initiatives promoted at the July 21 trade dialogue session in Washington.

Although it was signed last Friday (26), the statement was released by the Ministry of Economy only today (30).

During this dialogue session, the Brazilian and North American representatives presented the developments on the bilateral agenda. The meeting was chaired by the Ministry of Economy’s Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) and the US Department of Commerce’s Undersecretary for International Trade.

In this discussion, priority issues for the government and private sector were discussed. The topics were divided into thematic groups along the following axes: trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, conformity assessment practices, standards and metrology, intellectual property and the digital economy.

Created in 2006, the Trade Dialogue between Brazil and the United States is a bilateral cooperation mechanism that has been active between the two countries for a long time. The main objective of the initiative is to promote the flow of trade and mutual investment by preventing, reducing and eliminating barriers to unfettered access.

In recent years, the agenda has expanded to include bodies in discussions. On the Brazilian side, representatives from the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO), the National Institute of Industrial Property (INB), the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCDI) and other ministries and regulatory agencies are also participating.

The next meeting should take place in Brasilia, in 2023, at a date to be defined.
