A few days after defender Robson Reyes negotiated with Portugal’s Boavista, Santos came very close to losing another player in his team’s position. Uruguayan Emiliano Velasquez agreed on Monday night to end his contract amicably until December of this year.
The information was initially released by UOL. The official announcement should take place on Tuesday or no later than the end of this week. The departure of Velasquez was approved by the management committee, football chief executive Edo Dracena and Argentine coach Fabian Bustos.
Starting with the 2-1 defeat to Flamengo, last Saturday, for the Brazilian championship, the Uruguayan will start playing again this Wednesday against Deportivo Tachira, from Venezuela, at Villa Belmero, in Santos, for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana final.
Velazquez arrived in Santos in August last year for free. His contract has expired since the end of the 2020-2021 season, when the Spaniard Rayo Vallecano left. In all, he played in 27 matches for Peixe (10 in 2021 and 17 in 2022).
The 28-year-old defender from Montevideo started his football career with Danubio in Uruguay. Most notable in his home country, the defender was signed by Atlético Madrid in 2014. In Spain, he also played for Getafe and Rayo Vallecano, and also had a spell in Braga from Portugal.
