On top of Buachaille Etive Mr, a summit more than 1020 meters above sea level, in Scotland81-year-old Nick Gardner paused to gaze at the rugged peaks, lakes, and valleys visible through the floating clouds.

For Gardner, who moved with his wife Janet from a suburb of England to a remote corner of the Scottish Highlands at the age of 50, mountaineering became more than a childhood dream.

Two years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2018, Janet, a former teacher who also suffers from osteoporosis, became so ill that she required 24-hour care. Gardner was devastated and decided he needed a challenge to help him deal with the situation.

The couple lived a quiet life, accustomed to each other’s constant company for 30 years. Then suddenly it was over.

The climb allowed Gardner to focus again and avoid mental health issues which he was sure would start to injure if left aimless.

The task he set himself would challenge many half his life: climb all 282 “monros” in Scotland, or mountains over 3,000 feet (more than 914 metres), in 1,200 days.

He has completed 177 so far.

He learned social media skills with the help of his family, and he’s tracking his progress on Facebook and Instagram.

Many messages in a file Fundraising page, where he raised more than 30,000 pounds (more than 222,000 Brazilian reals) for a goal of 40,000 pounds (about 297,000 Brazilian reals), from the people he met on the side of the mountain.

The money Gardner raises will go to the Royal Osteoporosis Society and Alzheimer’s Foundation Scotland, two charities that previously helped his wife.
