As waves of anti-Israel protests spread across university campuses, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made a strong plea to universities in his country to take steps to protect Jewish students this Thursday (9).

Chunak highlighted the importance of academic institutions being “bastions of rigorous debate and tolerance and respect”.

In a statement, the Conservative prime minister expressed concern about “vociferous minorities” who, according to him, “interfere with academic life” and, in some cases, propagate “anti-Semitic harassment and abuse”. Insisting that “this has to stop”, the British leader urged universities to maintain “zero tolerance” for such abuses.

In recent days, according to information from the agency Reuters, students at universities in the United Kingdom decided to set up small camps within the institutions to protest the Israeli offensive in Gaza. The move is similar to what is happening in the US, where radical students have occupied educational institutions and chanted in support of Hamas.

Unlike the situation in the US, so far there have been no problems with camps set up by students at British universities. However, some Jewish students, according to the UK broadcaster skynews, Said that a certain increase in hostility towards them can be observed.
