(Sputnik) – Israeli forces fired American-made white phosphorus munitions in an attack on a village in southern Lebanon last October, The Washington Post reported Monday, citing its own analysis and that of two human rights groups.

The newspaper found the remains of three 155 mm artillery shells bearing batch production codes using US military terminology for munitions produced domestically in Louisiana in 1989 and Arkansas in 1992. Other characteristics, such as their color and markings, also indicate that the projectiles contained white phosphorus. The same symbols also appeared on white phosphorus shells alongside Israeli artillery photographed near the Gaza border on October 9. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International also confirmed the American source of the projectiles.

Images and videos analyzed by The Washington Post and Amnesty International also show streaks of smoke characteristic of white phosphorus falling over Deira.

The projectiles were among those fired on October 16 into the border village of Deira, burning at least four homes and wounding at least nine civilians, at least three of whom were taken to hospital.

Residents said that Israel bombarded the village with munitions for hours throughout the night, leaving them trapped until the next morning. They believe that Phosphorus was intended to force them to evacuate the village to make way for future Israeli military incursions.
