Today it was announced that Poynette businesses are teaming up to support a new local nonprofit, dedicated to making things easier statewide for many families.
‘Figuring out what to do next after your child receives an autism diagnosis can be overwhelming. Like being dropped into the ocean when you only said you were thirsty. Wisconsin is fortunate in that we have a lot of resources for diagnosed families… the trouble is that these resources are scattered all over,’ said Danielle Tolzmann, founder of Navigating Autism,Inc., and mother to an eight year old son on the autism spectrum. ‘We are truly excited about this partnership with Piggly Wiggly and The Bank of Poynette to raise awareness in our community, and to create the forum for a visible show of support for these families.’
In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, The Bank of Poynette and Poynette’s Piggly Wiggly are offering the opportunity to purchase ‘A Piece of the Puzzle’, for $1. The proceeds will benefit Navigating Autism, Inc., a nonprofit based in Poynette.
Navigating Autism, Inc. provides information outlining the resources available to families affected by an autism diagnosis. Information includes first steps following diagnosis, Wisconsin’s new health insurance mandates as it relates to autism, an ‘autism jargon’ terminology glossary, and Wisconsin public school system processes, rights and resources, as well as options for treatment grants.    Navigating Autism is staffed entirely by volunteers, and is financed solely by community support. Proceeds from this campaign will be used to continue website development, which is the primary means of providing information to families.
‘What causes autism is still being determined. But the resources that can help families are out there,’ Ms. Tolzmann concluded.
Future fundraising events include a ‘Charitable Giving’ campaign in conjunction with the Poynette City-Wide Garage Sale in May (www.navigatingautism.org), a Senior photo event is planned for June, and a cycling event in August (www.ridethecoldane.com)
