With the combined efforts of the Town of West Point, Columbia County Aging and Disability Resource Center, WI D.N.R., Okee Residents, Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley, and some stalwart hiking fans, we held the second annual Ride to the Top of Gibraltar Rock event. This event is designed to allow everyone to access the top of Gibraltar, which is now a DNR property, but also one of the most unique State Natural Areas.

Between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm, with a wide open gate,  vans carried any visitors to the top. Volunteers made sandwiches, lemonade and some especially good deserts for the visitors who stopped down at the Okee School House,  our home base for the day in case of rain.  Rumor has it that Joan Ryan gave out her Rhubarb Bar recipe for the event which was especially good. Although numbers were down, those that made it out before the rain were treated to breath taking views, some beautiful flowers, and turkey vultures interested in the activity on the rocks.

Our oldest visitor was 91 years old and grew up on the adjacent farm, while the youngest that made the hike was 2 years.

Diane Pillsbury, the centennial coordinator for Devils Lake brought her knowledge of the area and especially geology to educated attendees on the details of old and new rocks, what makes Gibraltar Rock unique and some details about Devils Lake as well.
