Volcanic ash causes new closure of La Palma airport

Cumbre Vieja volcano erupts on the Spanish island of La Palma on October 6, 2021 – AFP

The company AENA, which manages the country’s airports, told AFP that the airport on the Spanish island of La Palma was closed again Thursday morning (7) due to a cloud of ash emanating from the volcano that erupted more than two weeks ago. .

A spokeswoman for the agency said the airport is “out of business at the moment, because it is necessary to clean the runways where ash accumulates.”

The source explained that the closure, which is the second of its kind at the airport since the eruption of the “Comber Vieja” volcano on September 19 on this island in the Canary Archipelago, “may be rapid.”

Pinter airline announced the cancellation of its flights Thursday with landing and departure from La Palma.

“The layover will continue until conditions improve and allow us to fly safely,” the airline wrote on Twitter.

Rival Canaryfly issued a similar announcement: “We have again temporarily suspended all flights to and from La Palma. The new temporary suspension affects, for the time being, only Thursday flights.”

La Palma Airport suspended operations from September 25-29, also due to the ash.

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which did not result in casualties, caused the evacuation of more than 6,000 people and severely damaged the small island of 85,000 people.

The lava destroyed more than 1,000 properties affecting more than 400 hectares of the island.

In addition, the lava, which solidifies when it contacts the water, has created a kind of platform that extends nearly 40 hectares into the sea, according to the Canary Islands Volcanic Institute (Involcan).
