The U.S. conducted several B-2 bomber strikes on Wednesday against weapons depots in Houthi rebel-held areas of Yemen, the Department of Defense and the Army said.

“U.S. forces struck several underground Houthi bases, including various weapons elements used by the group to attack civilians and military vessels throughout the region,” U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

B-2s carried out “precision strikes” against five underground weapons depots, Austin added.

He pointed out that the use of this long-range stealth bomber model demonstrates “America’s global strike capability to operate against these targets anytime and anywhere as needed.”

The United States and the United Kingdom have been conducting a series of bombings aimed at halting Houthi attacks on shipping, but operations by Iranian-backed rebels against merchant ships crossing the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have continued.

“At the direction of President Biden, I authorized these targeted strikes to continue to destabilize the Houthis and protect and defend American forces and personnel along one of the world’s most important waterways,” Austin said.

CENTCOM, the US military command responsible for forces in the Middle East, said Wednesday there was no initial evidence of civilian casualties in the operation.
