Last Tuesday, September 24, the first edition of the topic “Languages of Science” was launched (languages of science)from the Graduate Program in Cell Biology and Development at the Center for Biological Sciences at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (PPGBCD/China Construction Bank/UFSC). Teaching is done using the COIL system (Online collaborative international learning), the course was created in partnership with the Imagine Project at UFSC. It is offered in English, simultaneously, to students at UFSC and the Euro-Mediterranean Master in Neuroscience and Biotechnology (EMN-Online)which includes a group of universities from the Mediterranean region and is coordinated by three French universities.
The 14 students enrolled in this pioneering edition come from 7 countries located on 3 continents. Topics such as: models of science communication, anti-science, pseudoscience, and science and democracy will be discussed. In addition to the theoretical classes, mixed teams made up of students from two or three countries will develop a science workshop on the topic of their choice, which will be implemented in a public school in each student’s country of residence.
The articles discussed in class are available in a virtual library, open to everyone, located on-site Discipline website. In addition to the three PPGBCD students (one of them from Angola), there are 6 Master’s students from Morocco, 4 from Tunisia, 1 from Egypt and 1 from France (citizen of Côte d’Ivoire). Possibilities for exchanges between UFSC and EMN-online students are also being considered.
