The virus is highly contagious among dogs in the United States

The highly contagious virus is spreading among dogs in Miami (USA), raising concerns among city health officials and leading to outbreaks of canine respiratory disease (CIRD). Among the main symptoms are persistent cough and sneezing, and progression to even more serious ones such as pneumonia or fever.

In view of what has happened, it is recommended that people help protect their pets, keep their vaccines up to date, and avoid crowded places such as parks and pet stores. Avoiding contact between dogs (from nose to nose) has also been pointed out as an essential measure in protecting pets.

Local officials point out that the virus can be spread by direct contact with an infected dog and contact with exposed individuals, and can carry clothing, hands and items such as food and water bowls, collars, toys and bedding. It should be noted, however, that this virus is easily defeated by such actions as:

• Use disinfectant
• Wash your hands with soap and water
• Wash bowls and toys in soap and water

Despite this, the virus passes through droplets in the air and is highly contagious, experts point out that it requires care. Even a Miami doctor, in an interview with CBS, said that those who live with pets should keep a safe distance between dogs and deal with the disease with the same caution that handles Kovit-19.

The guideline is that if the dog begins to show symptoms, its owner should immediately take it to a veterinarian and take antibiotics. Depending on the severity, dogs may be hospitalized for three to 10 days, but the infection can last up to a month. There are no cases yet in Brazil, but it is worth being vigilant and keeping vaccinations for pets up to date.
