Implementation of management processes and computerization of collecting and fish operations at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) are among the research objectives – “Ufam Regional Fishery Collection: Foundations for Its Expansion, Modernization and Science Dissemination”, coordinated by researcher and fisheries engineer Dr. Kedma Christine Yamamoto. This study is supported by the State Government, through the Biological Collections Program – Public Notice 008/2019 of the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas (Fapeam).

The Biological Collections/Museums Program supports, with financial resources and grants, projects that aim to support the organization, computerization, management, and dissemination of already existing institutional and museum biological collections that are a strategy for the State of Amazonas in public or private, not-for-profit institutions.

According to the coordinator, the main focus was the implementation of the process of managing and computerizing the territorial fish population, which was done manually in the past, as well as the inventory and increase in the number of fish species deposited, and the organization of information and knowledge in a database for training of human resources in the field of fish taxonomy. With the study, the number of fish jumped from 396 to 601 fish, an increase of 206 species.

“We are in the final stage of listing, but we can say that with the support of Fapeam, this number will tend to increase only with the inventory of new territories. The arrival of new species to the collection is unlimited, and an ongoing process, especially when it comes to the Amazon region,” said Kristin Yamamoto. .

The sites selected for the project are the Tupi Reserve for Sustainable Development (Manaus), Ilha da Paciencia in Errandoba (27 kilometers from Manaus), and São Gabriel da Cachoeira (852 kilometers from Manaus), with groups in diverse environments. Streams, beaches and lakes.

As indicated by the coordinator, samples from field collections were included in the fish collection, receiving the following information: a unique code (abbreviation of institution and serial number, starting from the last batch listed), taxonomic data in a binomial system and data indicating groups (geographical coordinates of the collection site) , name of collector, location of capture, number of personnel, date of collection, equipment used, and environment).

“In order to update the management and dissemination of information on the fallen fish in the collection, a database is being created to make it available to the external public through easy online consultation and the laboratory’s social network laboratory,” he added.

Kedma Christine argues that biological groups contribute to maintaining a nation’s biodiversity through their deposited samples. “The Ufam Regional Fish Group, associated with the Fisheries Engineering Course – College of Agricultural Sciences, is challenged to embark on this arduous task of representing fish diversity in the world’s largest hydrographic basin, the Amazon Basin. It is clear that this initiative represents a seed that we hope will thrive and last for generations within university,” he adds.

Effects

In addition to a direct impact on biodiversity conservation, all of the team’s work has also resulted in 16 articles being published in science events, including technical support grant guidance (intermediate level), seven science start-up projects and extensions, two course closings, and two mandatory training courses. Supervised (Fishing Engineering Course) and MSc Thesis in Animal Science and Fish Resources Course (PPGCARP/UFAM, in progress) totaling 14 academics.
