Square Enix has revealed the latest Tax Reportshowing a change in mentality in the way of release, putting an end to exclusive games. According to the studio head. Part of the sales decline is due to “cannibalization” between launches.
In his remarks in this excerpt from the financial report, Takashi Kiryu mentioned high-definition games, titles like Live a Live, Octopath Traveler, and others, which did not perform well, as well as the latest titles in the Final Fantasy series that were released as timed exclusives for the PS5.
“We recognize that there are still issues in the digital entertainment segment. The high-definition gaming sub-segment has failed to improve its profitability, recording operating losses in every year of our previous medium-term plan.“Square Enix President said.
Additionally, we do not manage the portfolio at the company level as much as we could. I believe this has led to missed opportunities due to the disaggregation of our titles.

There’s also all of the Kingdom Hearts collections for Steam, as well as the release of Fantasian, a game by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy, which Square Enix will publish sometime between the end of the year and the beginning of 2025.
While Square Enix is announcing changes to plans based on lower-than-expected sales performance, Tetsuya Nomura, a big name within the studio, says Kingdom Hearts 4 will be the beginning of the end of the series.
