SP automaker offers new car and benefits to lay off more than 1,000 employees

Car maker general motors, Responsible for Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun and other brands, It reached an agreement with metalworkers’ unions at three factories in São Paulo. More than a month after the Labor Court canceled about 1,200 layoffs, the company started on Tuesday the fifth of this month. In October, the company laid off 839 employees in São José dos Campos, 300 in São Caetano, and 105 in Mogi das Cruzes. To protest the cuts, metalworkers at the three plants in São Paulo went on strike for 17 days, ending only after the layoffs were canceled and until the automaker agreed to pay for the days off.

According to the Sao Jose dos Campos and Regional Metalworkers Union, the proposal is the result of negotiations between GM and the union.

The voluntary separation program runs until December 12 and is open to everyone who works regularly at the plant or is on paid leave. The goal is to terminate a similar number of workers in the units where layoffs occurred.


The General Secretary of the São José dos Campos Federation, Renato Almeida, informed that they are against closing any jobs, but that PDV is an alternative to the layoffs that have taken place.

The Voluntary Separation Program offers:

  • For workers who work in the factory from one to six years: Six months’ salary, an additional R$15,000 and a three-month medical plan or R$6,000;
  • For workers who have worked in the factory for seven years or more: Five months’ salary, an Onix Hatch LS or R$85,000 and a six-month medical plan or R$12,000;
  • For every active factory worker who joins the factory, another worker will return on paid leave;
  • For those who don’t jointhere will be job stability until May 3, 2024;
  • Regarding the days that were stopped during the strike, The proposal stipulates a 50% compensation until June 30, 2024, depending on production needs.
