Paolo Rondelli is one of the two leaders of the regent, elected by indirect vote, who will chair San Marinoa small state of 34,000 inhabitants, over the next six months, by tradition.

“I will probably be the first head of state in the world who belongs to the LGBTQIA+ community,” Rondelli stated on his Facebook account.
Marco Tonti, President of the Arcigay Society of Emilia-Romagna, the Italian region where San Marino Falls, hailed a “historic event.”

“He is the first openly gay head of state and rights activist for the LGBTQIA+ community,” he said. “There are precedents among prime ministers and ministers, but they are unprecedented in the world for a head of state.”
In fact, there are many governments led or led by professed gay personalities, among them Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg since 2013, and Icelandic Joanna Sigurdardottir (2009-2013).

This Friday, Italian politicians attended the inauguration of the two leaders, including Justice Minister Marta Cartappia and Senator Monica Serena, who is famous on the peninsula for her commitment to the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Rondelli is “a man of immense culture and great diplomatic and political experience. He has fought for the rights of women and LGBTI people and not only in San Marino‘,” Cirinnà wrote on her Facebook account.
“It is a historic day that fills me with joy and pride, because Paulo Rondelli will be, from today and over the next six months, the world’s first head of state belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community,” he added.
