Authorities are still investigating the extent of damage caused by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit southern Haiti on Saturday (8/14).

It is known that at least 227 people were killed and dozens injured.

The earthquake also left a trail of physical destruction in a poor country, where not all buildings are prepared to withstand seismic activity in the region. Local authorities have reported structural damage in the city of Jeremy and the capital, Port-au-Prince.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was about 12 kilometers northeast of Saint-Louis-de-Sud.
