On Thursday, September 26, 2024, the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMTRO) held another edition of the Scientific Metrology Seminars, under the slogan “Science and Technology: Indicators and Social Impacts”. This event, which was held virtually, brought together researchers, scholarship holders, graduate students and technical courses, as well as representatives of the national scientific community, partner institutions of the Institute and the Brazilian Network of Legal Metrology and Quality Inmetro (RBMLQ – I).

The lecture was moderated by the Director of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) and Professor Emeritus of the University of Brasilia (UnB), Fernanda Sobral, which addressed the challenges faced by science, technology and innovation policies. Sobral highlighted the social and economic impacts on research and how indicators used by funding agencies play an important role in enhancing social impacts, especially in a democratic context.

Sobral also spoke about contemporary conditions of knowledge production, emphasizing factors such as globalization, democratization, the revolution in media and information, and environmental sustainability. According to her, globalization was an important factor in the technological revolution, as it shaped the progress of science and its impact on society.

The Head of Teaching and Research at Inmetro (Diepi), Charles Prado, highlighted the importance of the seminars: “This monthly space is dedicated to disseminating and discussing developments, challenges and innovations in metrology, covering both topics directly related to scientific metrology as well as cross-cutting issues, which bring reflections on everyday work.” ” According to him, the seminars also serve to enrich the scientific publication of the institution. He concluded, “This initiative encourages innovation and technological development, and aligns research with contemporary trends.”
