WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is finalizing three safety guidelines that will allow some Boeing 777s to return to service with Brad & Whitney 4000 engines.

New final flight eligibility guidelines include models such as the United Airlines 777, which encountered problems shortly after departure from Denver, USA in February 2021. This episode was marked by a rain of falling garbage in nearby cities. The plane returned safely to the airport as no one was injured in the incident.

The FAA says the new guidelines call for improved inspections and modifications that will allow Boeing 777-200 and 777-300 aircraft powered by Brad & Whitney engines to fly again after more than a year on the ground. The rules were proposed in December after three reports of aircraft failures on the engine’s propeller blades.

An order is required to install debris shields on the inner wall of the thrust reverser, inspect the components for moisture injection, and check the hydraulic pump valves frequently. The other requires replacement so that the motor resists the failure of the motor fan blades. Depending on the results of the study, specific corrections may be required for one-third of the area.

The orders will take effect in mid-April.

In February 2021, the U.S. Transportation Safety Agency (NTSB) ordered the immediate inspection of 777 aircraft with PW 4000 engines before further flights, following the discovery of a split plate on the engine fan of the United aircraft.

Boeing should now develop a service bulletin outlining the steps airlines must take to meet their needs. The bulletin must be approved by the FAA before flights can return to service.
