Brazil has five Libertadores ranked teams and two National Classics in the quarter-finals

The 2022 Copa Libertadores is designed for another season of the Brazilian championship. So far, they have been ranked: Atletico PR, Atletico MG, Palmeiras, Flamengo and Corinthians. In addition, Fortaleza awaits the decision to determine the last place in the quarter-finals, against Estudiantes de la Plata, this Thursday (7), at 21:30, at the Jorge Luis Hershey Stadium.

Meanwhile, Argentina, which also has strong traditions and achievements in eternal glory, has only two representatives in the quarter-finals of the competition: Velez Sarsfield and Talleres. The traditional River Plate and Boca Juniors fell into the final phase of the fray, the last of them to Corinth in Bombonera.

Among the Brazilians, the favorites for the title are Palmeiras, Flamengo and Atlético MG. However, there is no doubt that the five – or six – will compete for the Eternal Glory award until the last two candidates remain for the decision, which will take place on October 29, at the Monumental Stadium in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

In addition to the Brazilian numerical superiority, the tournament will host two national classics, in search of a place in the semi-finals. These are the confrontations between Palmeiras, Atlético-MG, Corinthians and Flamengo. Teams have a long history of confrontations, both in national and international football competitions. And at every match, fans promise to fill stadiums with cheers and incentives for their favorite teams.

In the past between Palmeiras and Atlético MG, Alverde has a good advantage in wins and knockouts. In total, there are 89 matches between the teams of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, with 39 victories for Alfefrede, 30 victories for Alfinegro and 20 draws. In the five times they contested a decision in competitions, Palmeiras had the best in four of them. Gallo got rid of the opponent only in the round of 16 of the 2014 Brazil Cup, when he won the title, which he has not heard of until now.

Last year, the two teams also faced each other in the Libertadores match, in the semi-finals of Gloria Eterna. The first match ended in a 1-1 draw, a fact that favored Alviverde, with the criterion of away goals, now extinct due to competition. And in the second leg, at Allianz Park, the decision ended 0-0, to consecrate the Palmeiras classification for the Grand Final.

Already in the past between Corinthians and Flamengo, the dispute is more balanced, however, Robro Negro has a small advantage in victories and victories in the knockout stage. The first match of the so-called Clasico de Beauvo took place on December 1, 1918, 104 years ago. In all, there are 142 matches, with 59 victories by Mingao, 53 victories by Timao and 30 draws.

In qualifying, the Flamengo eliminated Corinthians in four of seven decisions that marked the national classic. The last knockout match took place in the Copa Brazil 2019, when the two teams met in the round of 16 of the tournament, and Robro Negro won. The year before, however, Alfinegro won. Now, the competitors with the biggest fans in the country will face each other again, this time for Glória Eterna.
