Ducks and people lined up for the Lodi Library Run

Today was the 22nd Annual Lodi Library Run. With skies threatening rain, 100+ runners and walkers put their best foot forward and did this iconic August run.  You can’t beat the price of $3 day of sign up for a little bit of exercise and community fun.

While the rain held off for the start, the deluge hit me and Terry Ryan, who joined me on the walk, about the 1 mile mark. Mike Goethel was the timer at that point and gave everyone a great shout out.  I haven’t gotten used to walking these races yet and hearing the much slower times, but there is a relaxing aspect to doing the walk and holding a conversation with someone you don’t see too often.

Volunteers make it happen

You can’t hold a race like this and not mention the volunteers who help setup the course, wait at each turn, handout water and tally up the winners. Many sponsors provide products of money to help put this on. Next time you see them in town, thank them for being a volunteer and making Lodi a better place.

Speaking of benefits

The race benefits the Lodi Public Library, which due to the success of the past events, is able to buy a variety of reading materials for our community. In 2010 they spent more than $30,000 on databases, books, movies, audiobooks, music and more. Lodi area patrons enjoy these resources thanks to the funds raised through this event. This year they have focused on more children’s reading materials and audio books for the kids backpacks program.

Susie the Duck Days

The run/walk brings kids and families out for the start of an exciting weekend in the Scenic Lodi Valley. Main Street in Lodi was closed off for the morning with a juggler, food vendors, and shops displaying sale items. I was disappointed that the band was unable to play early due to the downpour. But right on target, the sun came out around 11:00 am, the empty street filled up and the Rotary Parade was held!

Here is my slideshow from the race:
