The below piece is a response to a letter to the editor that was printed in the Lodi Enterprise on 3-31-11 by John Pickle. www.lodienews.com

Dear Editor,

During a telephone conversation with Allison Seaton, I agreed to create an agenda for a meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lodi Public Library.  The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how we could mobilize local resources in the face of public service cuts resulting from Governor Walker’s budget bill.  The following is that agenda:

(1.) State mandated municipal recycling program cuts;

(2.) Public Library Cuts:

(a.) 10% reduction in funds to library systems;

(b.) Elimination of municipality Maintenance of Effort;

(c.) Levy limits held to 0% or rate of local construction;

(3.) Food Pantry;

(4.) Schools;

(5.) Volunteerism Opportunities.

We discussed these issues and also the idea of asking Representative Keith Ripp to come to Lodi to talk to Lodi area citizens. I fail to understand how any of this constitutes “childish drivel”.

Mr. Pickle continues in his letter by writing, ”This group is even going to check to see who voted for the opposing viewpoint, donated money to a campaign that disagreed with their point of view and plans to boycott any business that had the audacity to disagree with their own personal opinion and viewpoint on any issue.” Not one of these items was discussed.

Mr. Pickle obviously was not present at this meeting, because if he had been, it would have been impossible for him to write his letter, since none of the actions ascribed to our group occurred. I would like to suggest to Mr. Pickle that if he is going to listen to hearsay, he should follow the established guidelines of the working press: confirmation from two verifiable sources.

The group’s name is “Citizens Now” and we will be holding our next meeting on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at 3:30 p.m., location to be determined. Mr. Pickle is invited to attend and thus be able to verify himself what is said and done at this meeting.

In closing, John Pickle, to use your words, ”Do something positive with your energy and not be hateful.” I am looking forward to meeting you at our upcoming meeting.

Peter Berthold
