The Lodi wrestling team and its legacy were in full swing on Saturday, March 7th as they made their way to the State Championship match at the UW Fieldhouse. The week prior to the team state tournament had proved fruitful for Lodi with four wrestlers securing individual titles. Kasey Einerson (112) placed sixth, Cody Endres (215) placed second, and both Keegan Einerson (103) and Logan Einerson (152) received State Champion hardware.

Lodi entered the team state competition with high expectations. Along the way, they defeated Oconto Falls in the semifinals (32-26) in a bout of close matches. Prospects were high in the finals after Lodi was up 17-3 early in the match. But throughout the rest of the matches, the Blue Devil grapplers would only receive six more team points. Meanwhile their opponent, Ellsworth, went on a 32-point tear to secure the state team title.

The irony behind this match up is that Lodi defeated Ellsworth in 2008 for the State Championship. Perhaps Ellsworth wanted more than just a small taste of victory in this “re-match”. Senior Brock Miller looked back on the match as, “Ellsworth getting back at us.” He went on to state that the team “could have wrestled better.” This seems to be the overall sentiment of the team. According to Junior Cody Endres, “we were the better team, but we lost some key matches.” As a leader of the team, Endres had garnered six team points in his match by pinning his opponent in 1:05.

Without a doubt Lodi has a legacy when it comes to wrestling. Team State Championships can’t come every year and Lodi has had their fair share–winning titles in 1998, 2004, and 2008–but this evidently doesn’t take the pain away from being so close to the top, this year. The team did a lot of hard work to make it as far they did and for that they should be proud.
