On June 3rd, students from the high school enrolled in Environmental Science ventured out to Spring Creek to conduct various assessments on water quality.  Hannah Fanney and Katee Kratcha lead the groups as they mixed chemicals and searched the creek for aquatic life.  Crayfish, juvenile trout, mayfly larva, and more was eagerly examined by the students.  Other assessments included: creek habitat, water clarity, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, biotic index, and water flow.

Trained by the DNR and UW-Extensions, Fanney and Kratcha, as well as many other community citizens, will be routinely monitoring the health of Spring Creek.  This program was sponsored by the Friends of Lodi Scenic Valley and will last for at least one year.  “After the training, we were inspired to pass on our knowledge to the schools,” says Fanney.  She adds, “I wanted to give the students an idea of how important Spring Creek is to the community and I am hoping that they will gain a little more respect for our watershed.”
