The Lodi high school ski teams had a humbling day at the January 8th Iola Classic finishing in 8th place behind several of the state’s strongest teams. Elliot Statz finished 21st in the 6 kilometer classic race that featured several Junior Olympians and elite high school skiers. Sam Taylor finished 27th followed by Cory Conway (32nd), Garrett Patrick (33rd), and James Saager (35th).

Coach Fanney comments, “Elliot and Sam continue to have very good races against some of the best skiers in the state. Lodi’s ski trails were damaged by the recent thaw, making it difficult for our skiers to train at the higher intensities needed for ski racing.”
Lodi girls high school team was led by Paige Nichols (26th), followed by Chelsea Buchanan (33rd), Melissa Kohlhagen (39th), and Sydney Endres (42nd). Several new skiers, including Jenny Escher, Shannon Grover, Bethany Patrick, and Madeline Tompach, completed their first serious high school race.
The 3.5 kilometer middle school race was led by Peter Gundach (16th), followed by Joel Fugere (19th), Nathan Taylor (21st), and Matt Saager (24th). Aiden Campbell led the Lodi girls finishing 14th. Sarah Shimshack finished in 25th place.
Wausau East/West won the boys high school race followed by Waukesha Peak Nordic in second place and Ashwaubenon in third. Waukesha Peak Nordic won the girls race with Wausau West placing second, and Iola third.
Coach Fanney concludes, “The Lodi ski teams will travel to the North Kettle Moraine on Sunday, January 16th for the Greenbush Nordic Challenge.”
